This weekend, something very special is happening. A group of children ranging from ages 5-18 are gathering together after months of rehearsals and practicing at home, and they are putting on a show. Encore Theater Company presents Romeo and Harriet, debuting this Friday night, November 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Berean Bible Church in Pottstown P.A. This “Musical, Tragical Comedy in Two and a Half Acts” is sure to be a good show.
Twice a year, Encore Theater Company puts on plays like this. Children from all around the area (Oley, Pottstown, Amity, Reading, Boyertown, etc.) gather for auditions that take place at St. Paul’s UCC Church in Douglassville, PA. Each and every child that tries out for a play is selected to participate in some way. They are all a part of the show whether it is with a large speaking part or a part in the chorus. Encore Theater Company seems to recognize that what is important is that no child is turned away from their love of the arts.
Rehearsals for these productions occur twice a week for months before the show is put on. As the show approaches, the time commitment becomes a bit larger, increasing to 3 days a week for about 2-2.5 hours each time. This may sound long, but not a second goes by where a child is not enjoying themselves or where they are not proud of what they are accomplishing. Don’t worry, snack time is included and breaks are taken to get some sillies out. Parents are also included and welcome to volunteer their time as well.
If your child has participated in a camp or even is just interested in the arts, make sure to contact Encore Theater Company. The first step is to stay on the lookout for future auditions and productions. Once you have auditioned and figured out your child’s role, you will need to join the Theater Company. At $225, the price may seem steep, but numerous fundraisers are offered that children can take part in to subsidize this amount. Each fundraising effort goes directly toward their own fund and 100% of every ticket sold for the show goes there as well. Some fundraisers to choose from include Wawa Hoagie Sales, Pampered Chef Sales, and a yearly mum sale.
Becoming a part of the Encore Theater Company isn’t just about the theater. That is just the bonus. It is about making new friendships, believing in yourself, growing confidence, and becoming a team player. These characteristics will last a lifetime.
Make sure you head out to Romeo and Harriet this weekend to see what this fantastic performing arts company is all about. Tickets are $10-12 and will be sold at the door.
