On Sat. June 1, 2013 at 9:00AM the 2^nd annual Friends for Life 5K Community Run/Walk will be held to benefit the American Cancer Society.  The run will begin and end at the Washington Township Park, located just off of Rt. 100 and Niantic Road, across from Washington Elementary School.

This event will be fun for the whole family.  Get those sneakers on and come out to help fight cancer one step at a time.  There will be a 5K Walk and a Kids Fun Run available as well.

Rosemary Toscano Wisniewski uses an inversion table to help find relief from chonic neck and shoulder pain.

I just finished hanging upside down. I would love to hang upside down every day, it definitely helps lessens muscle tension and help relieves my neck pain. However, if I had an inversion table at home, in reality it would turn into another place to hang clothes on. That’s why I added the inversion therapy option to my Serenity Junction Wellness Center membership.

Serenity Junction is a fitness center in Boyertown. The center’s equipment is specifically designed to help the human body function properly. The inversion table is only one example of this type of equipment. The center also offers vibration exercise, standard cardio exercise equipment (such as an elliptical trainer), hydro-massage and ionic foot therapy. The goal, says Shannon Anthony, Serenity Junction’s owner, is to help people feel better every day by reducing pain associated with everyday living.

“I just want people to be active, because being active can create healthy lifestyle and a healthy lifestyle can mean a pain-free life, which is the goal for most people,” said Shannon. In my case, Shannon has certainly attained her goal. I joined Serenity Junction a year and a half ago. I had already had chronic pain and fatigue issues for many years and I was having a harder and harder time of handling the stress of everyday life. I became committed to managing my stress and pain through exercise, diet and stress reduction techniques such as meditation. The problem for me was, as it is for many people, that the pain made it hard to begin to exercise, and the pain would often worsen if I did too much.

After seeing an ad for Serenity Junction, which said the wellness center offered Wave Vibration Accelerated Training, I stopped in to see if it could help me in my quest for optimum health and wellness. I wasn’t familiar with vibration exercise, but when Shannon told me it provides the same results as working out in a gym in much less time and reduces chronic pain by activating more than double the muscles in conventional exercise, I was sold. Shannon purchased the Wave machines specifically for people who have chronic pain and are limited in movement. According to the WAVE, the manufacturer of the vibration machines Shannon uses, vibration exercise provides:

• increased strength and flexibility,
• positive effects on bone density,
• better balance and muscle tone,
• improved circulation and reduced spasms,
• and — as I mentioned earlier and can attest to — reduction in chronic pain.

Shannon Anthony, Serenity Junction’s owner uses one the Wave Vibration Accelerated Training machines to strengthen the ankle she broke last year during a mud run.

Shannon has recently experienced the positive effect vibration exercise can have on recovering from an injury. Last year, she participated in a Zombie mud run, and although she made it through the course without being turned into a Zombie, when she jumped into the mud at the end of the run, she lost balance and her ankle twisted beneath her, causing three fractures in her ankle bones. Her ankle needed to be surgically repaired. “I heard that the official ER reports listed the cause of injury as ‘freak accident.’” Shannon told me when she returned by to work after the injury. “I’m a freak accident!” (That is another thing I really love about to Serenity Junction regularly; it is a very personal and relaxed atmosphere. I can honestly refer to Shannon as my friend.)

But what really inspired Shannon to open a wellness center that specializes in reducing pain is her experience with inversion therapy, or as I like to refer to it, hanging upside down. After finding relief from chronic back pain by using and inversion table, she wanted to share that experience with other people.

“There was a time I couldn’t sleep in a bed because the pain. I was awful, she told me. Then turning to look behind us, she pointed at the Teeter brand inversion table, she added, “That was always first.”

According to a variety of sources, inversion therapy can provide a number of benefits, including improving blood flow to the lower limbs, improving flexibility and mobility and reduces neck and spine pain since gravitational pull from your head helps open up disc space.

Since relaxation is invaluable in the quest to reduce pain, Shannon also purchased two hydro-massage beds, which are located in a private area. You lie on the bed, fully clothed while heated water jets run under you, giving you a full body massage. HydroMassage is designed so the user can control the speed and pressure of the massage. I do not have this option added to my monthly membership, but I do splurge and buy a session when I really need it.

Serenity Junction offers HydroMassage to help clients benefit from a full-body massage in 15 mintutes. The wellness center’s owner, Shannon Anothony is relaxing on one of the center’s two HydroMassage tables.

Who We Are: The Blazer Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization created and administered by a board of community volunteers to receive and allocate resources that will serve to enhance the district’s educational and cultural programs and enrich the students of the Daniel Boone Area School District.  We are partners with the Daniel Boone School District, its students and its community; however we are not part of the school district.

What We Do: The Blazer Foundation purpose is to enhance the education and development of Daniel Boone youth through supporting creative and innovative programs and sustaining community and business partnerships.

Region 1:  Rich Martino

In all honesty I think it’s hard for any School Board member or the School Board as a whole, for that matter, to have a ‘vision’ for education in the Daniel Boone Area School District (DBASD) when so much time every year is devoted to putting out the fire of revenue shortfall.  I will say that, if elected to this four-year term, I would hope to see that by the end of my first two years we would have stabilized our revenue situation to the benefit of both the students and the taxpayers.  To do this we are going to have to make hard choices; choices on curriculum, on contracts, on revenue streams, etc.  But it’s time to make these hard choices and finalize these decisions rather than having the same discussions year after year.  Parents, students, residents and taxpayers are all entitled to know what to expect rather than always awaiting last minute decisions.  We need to build on the decisions that have been working beneficially for us and do our best to correct the decisions that haven’t.  If we can bring about this stabilization in the next two years we then could devote our energy to what I believe a School Board really should be doing and that is enhancing the education experience of our children while preparing them for life after their school years.

I envision a School Board that better explains the problems we are facing; either publicly at School Board meetings, through the DBASD website or through other social media so the public is better informed and, thus, better equipped to offer viable solutions.  Currently at School Board meetings I hear groups who want to preserve kindergarten, sports, music, etc.; all worthy intentions but I seldom hear solutions being offered on how to fund each program.  My hope is that the next group of nine Board members can have increased participation from the Blazer Foundation, the Daniel Boone Task Force, the various Booster Clubs and the community in general to develop solutions as situations arise.  I would also like to see the School Board have more direct involvement with the three local municipalities in attracting development that increases our tax base without increasing the student population.

I think I’ve been pretty clear in the six weeks of responding to this Q & A in outlining who I am as a candidate.  My only final thought is to assure the people of our community that I will do my best to provide quality education to our children while ensuring fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers.

Region 1:  Steve Miller – PLEASE WRITE-IN “Steve Miller” 

I believe the development of a vision and long-term planning is the best way to address the problems facing our school district today.  Instead of picking apart the system and deciding on where or on whom to lay blame, we need to develop a vision that looks objectively at the state of our school district and how to move it forward. We need to develop an approach that is proactive, productive, and positive.

The local public school system is a strong indicator of the values and priorities of the community.  The quality of life in the community is directly impacted by the students and programs produced by the Daniel Boone school system.  A strong school district increases property values and attracts families to the community.

The vision for the Daniel Boone school district should include the following:

Emphasis on Early Learning and Childhood Education – Young brains develop fast and furiously which makes early education especially critical.  Children need a level of readiness for school in order to be successful as they progress through the school system.

Focus on Teaching and Learning – It is important that we allow time for meaningful instruction and assessment.  Teachers should not be forced to adopt a cookie cutter approach where they must follow inflexible curricula and use standardized tests as the ultimate assessment.

Technology – A master technology plan needs to be developed to ensure we are taking advantage of all resources available to control expenses while improving the quality education.  Cyber schooling should be embraced to provide flexibility and additional opportunities to children of the school district.

Leadership and Accountability – The school district needs to be held accountable for safeguarding the quality of education provided to our children and ensuring taxpayer resources are not wasted.  Transparency and effective local oversight are critical to ensure the vision is realized.  Discussion on and decisions about funding needs to focus on the facts and deciding on what level of education we are willing to support.

Funding and Resources – Funding and allocation of scarce resources is the biggest challenge the school district faces today.  Personnel, technology, facilities, transportation, supplies, utilities, insurance, security, professional development,  etc.; costs money, and when prices go up, the school district is affected just like everything else. We must develop an effective plan to ensure adequate funds are available to provide essential programs.

I would be honored to have the opportunity to use my education and experience to serve the community.  I am quite concerned with the state and direction of the Daniel Boone school district.  I would like an opportunity to participate in shaping the future direction of the school district to ensure our children receive the quality education they deserve.

Region 2:  Carol Beitz

Assuming we can somehow get back on a financially stable path, the current fiscal crisis may serve as an opportunity to restructure our education system from the ground up.  Thus far, we have (out of necessity) pared away programs and curriculum in desperate attempts to balance the budget yearly.  My vision is to rebuild the Boone education system with long term planning, incorporating our community priorities and engaging community partners but moving forward with lessons learned about fiscal sustainability.
